Craft Works

Craft Scotland, which works with design-related businesses, had ten designers featured at this year’s Homes & Interiors Scotland Exhibition. We’re happy to show you some of their work.

Clockwise from left Joachim King, Layer chair; Julia Douglas, Rebecca Wilson & Clare Waddle, A Wee Bit of Light Relief; Joanna Kessel, Stripe (marble & smalti); James Donald, Blanket

Textile artist James Donald recently completed a Masters of Design course and has been awarded a Creative Development Award by the Scottish Arts Council, which will enable him to take time out from his teaching job to develop his textile work. www.craftscotland.org/jamesdonald.html

Woodworker Joachim Layer makes customordered furniture in his Glasgow studio. He is currently designing a library for a well known TV comedian (no, he won’t tell us who!) and coorganising a furniture exhibition in October at The Lighthouse in Glasgow as part of the Scottish Furniture Makers’ Association. www.scottishfurnituremakers.org.uk

Joanna Kessel specialises in site-specific mosaic artworks for domestic and public spaces. She is particularly passionate about creating work to enhance healthcare facilities, convinced that visually stimulating environments help create a sense of well-being among patients, staff and visitors. www.joannakessel.co.uk

With a common interest in crossover potential within visual arts, Julia Douglas, Rebecca Wilson and Clare Waddle co-exhibited at the Homes & Interiors Scotland Exhibition. They are currently working on an exhibition inspired by the home, which they hope to tour. www.juliadouglas.co.uk, www.rebeccawilsonceramics.com www.clarewaddle.co.uk

The Homes & Interiors Scotland Exhibition at the SECC in August showcased over 100 exhibitors. Highlights included an interior design presentation by world-renowned designer Nina Campbell, known for her luxury fabric, wallpaper and accessory collections. The centrepiece of the exhibition was the Interior Design Showcase (this year including garden design), in which eight of Scotland’s top interior designers created roomsets in a full-scale house ‘built’ exclusively for the show. www.homesandinteriorsscotland.com/exhibition
