Whisky galore

With Homecoming well and truly underway, whisky obviously plays a major role in the festivities. The Homecoming website has a vast number of events listed throughout the year from a production Whisky Galore at Pitlochry Festival Theatre; The Talisker Taste Experience at The Gathering in Holyrood Park in July. On the other hand, why not take a jaunt out to Edinburgh’s closest distillery, Glenkinchie, less than 20 miles from the city. Even the Fringe has several whisky themed with tutored tastings at The Scotch Malt Whisky Society at the Vaults and 28 Queen Street.

Ship ahoy

Once again, Clair Blackler of Case Studies Wine School is running her ‘Wine School at the Fringe’. The barge is based in the city’s Canal Quarter and, with eleven different shows, fifty performances and sixty-five wines, there’s bound to be something to excite your palate. I just love Claire’s descriptions of her ‘classes’: Pearls of the Paarl – South African; American Beauties says it all as does A Lovely Bunch of Rosés and the Soave & Sophisticated shows that there is more to Italian wines than Pinot Grigio! It’s a unique space and the wines are just cracking. Last year I did at least three of them including Vital Sparkle the fizzy one. *HIC*

Everything stops for tea

It seems to me that everyone and his dog have gotten into doing a piece on afternoon tea. I'll forgo the history as this has been covered in other publications, but I'd just like to raise a china teacup to Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford and her ladies who got peckish between luncheon and dinner.

There are a vast array of hotels, coffee shops and cafes that dispense afternoon tea and I visited three different establishments to vilify their credentials into this institution that is making a welcome comeback.
