SETTING
The décor is fresh, bright and pure white, featuring an artistic black mural denoting Edinburgh’s designated Greenspaces and a pleasing mixture of banquette seating piled with cushions and old church pew chairs. Urban Angel is a casual, lively bistro by day, while soft jazz and candles make it romantic by night.
FOOD
Founded by Gilly Macpherson in 2004 with the passionate aim to offer locally sourced, seasonal, organic, free range, fair trade produce to city residents. The concept is based around all day dining from brunch (available until 5pm), light salads to hearty venison stew – and the whole menu uses quality ingredients, from Peelham Farm pork belly to Ballencrieff sausages. The friendly staff in the newest branch are extremely knowledgeable about the extensive range of dishes on the menu, daily specials and any specific dietary requests. The flexible menu is also a welcome touch, allowing you to mix and match dishes as you please.
To start, my partner and I share three tasty tapas: sweet, paper-thin, house-marinated salmon; spicy tomato smothered patatas bravas and spinach tortilla with feta and rocket salad. From the specials board I choose a feast of fettuccine with olives, aubergine and peppers – which arrives tasting of Mediterranean sunshine, while we also try Macsween’s famous veggie haggis on a mound of creamy clapshot mash and mustard sauce. All cakes, ice-cream pastries and desserts are home-made.
My pear and frangipane tart with tangy yogurt is light as a feather and stuffed with fresh fruit, while across the table a cute wee carrot cake with white chocolate sauce is quickly devoured. Our meal is well complement by a smooth plummy South African fair trade Merlot. With organic wine, beer and soft drinks, this is healthy, feel-good, fine dining, based on a natural lifestyle philosophy that won’t cost the earth.
