SETTING
This classic vintage pub is an absolute find of an eaterie, nestled in the sleepy and sunny south coastal village of Aberlady, just outside Edinburgh. It’s original features, wooden beams, country-kitchen kitsch furniture, accompanied with candlelit tables on the terrace, and curious discreet nooks and crannies, simply adds to the cosy intimate atmosphere – and whether townie or tourist it welcomes you with warm open culinary arms.
FOOD
Dining is bold and basic, succulent and simple, with the focus on taste and good fresh local produce, and whatever your hungry heart desires this menu delivers excellent cuisine. To start, the magnificent filo parcel of haggis on potato mash with a whisky sauce slips down perfectly. While my dining companion opts for the more subtle delicate smoked salmon with luscious prawns and spicy paprika mayo.
Tastebuds tingling, my main of tender roast lamb, nestling on a bed of mashed potato with rosemary jus, hits the spots, although I’m slightly envious of my partner’s seductive rib eye steak, accompanied by a wonderfully explosive rich peppercorn sauce, which packs a mouth watering punch in all the right places - all superbly complimented with a fruity glass of Pinot Noir Reserva, Nostros.
And to finish, keep the fork there’s going to be cake, well dessert to be exact, lose yourself a rich raspberry and Drambuie brulee with homemade shortbread or melt marvellously into a blackcurrant sorbet – or if that waistband’s just a little too tight there’s the selection of fabulous Scottish cheeses – Howgate Brie, Maises Kebuck, Dunsyre Blue and Drumloch – all washed down with a speciality coffee – cheeky Russian coffee liqueur nightcap anyone? Dinner is a delightful breath of fresh air far away from gastro pubs, and proving that when its comes to sleepy little village pubs, this isn’t just a flash in the pan, it’s a wonderful whimsical treat in a sweet urban romantic kind of a way.
