SETTING The latest venture from the team behind Edinburgh institution The Street has taken over this venue, just five minutes from Broughton Street, and transformed a traditional pub into Elbow, a light airy relaxed bar and kitchen, which offers food from morning until night.

FOOD The lunch menu is short and snappy, offering some delicious sounding usual suspects as well as some more unusual choices. We start with French onion soup (the choice changes daily). It arrives in a cute little individual soup pot, and is topped with a savoury cheese crouton that acts as a lid to the savoury broth beneath. The Stornoway black pudding with pancetta and poached egg is equally delicious, combining sweet brioche, salty pancetta and unctuous egg perfectly – both starters get the thumbs up.

For mains, the chicken kebab with couscous is lightly spiced and accompanied by mini pittas, earthy homemade hoummus and refreshing tzaziki. My wild mushroom gnocchi is a dish of light potato dumplings coated in a velvety cream and wine sauce.

While we pass on dessert, we’ll definitely be back to try the homemade ice-cream in a waffle cone. Perfect for a hot summer’s day.
